Our son Shawn has a developmental disability and was mainstreamed in school throughout his school years. We were very fortunate that Shawn accepted challenges that were before him and that he had many friends in school.
When Shawn graduated he no longer had a regular daily routine and was alone quite often. He had limited social involvements and increasingly became more depressed about his life. We both had to work and couldn’t spend the days with him. His “down” periods became longer and more severe. That was a very difficult period for us and for our son.
We connected with the Arc of Steuben almost three years ago. Within a month he was offered the opportunity to live in one of the Arc’s small homes. At his home, Shawn makes independent choices, has his own space, and is involved in the community. He has two roommates and there is at least one staff person there at all times.
Shawn has gained independence which has increased his self esteem. The staff are wonderful to him and genuinely care about his well being. He also has a job at Arc’s work center and is collaborating with others through the Incredible Angels, a self-advocacy group.
When our children are happy, we are happy. Shawn likes to visit us and also likes his own home and friends. We can relax and enjoy life knowing our son is well cared for.
The Arc of Steuben Foundation raises funds to support the services provided by the Arc of Steuben. Founded by local parents, we have been meeting the needs of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities since 1964. Children and adults with disabilities are fully involved in community life and no longer isolated. This is just one story among many, and one family among many that are grateful the Arc is there for them.
At this special time of year, I ask you to open your hearts and your checkbook and make a gift to express your care and support of the families in your community who face extra challenges that disabilities present each day of their lives. Your gift will fund both immediate needs and will ensure funding for future needs.
We are experiencing serious cuts in our funding. Please help ensure that the Arc of Steuben will continue to be able to support families like the Semples. I wish you a blessed and peaceful year ahead.
Warm wishes,

Connie Manikas, President,
