Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability that results in a variety of significant social, communication and behavioral challenges. According to the Center for Disease Control, approximately one in 68 children has ASD.

Core Characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Social Difficulties

  • Deficits in social communication, or how the person exchanges information with other people, such as little or no verbal language
  • Deficits in social interaction, or how the person relates with other people. A person with ASD may have few or no friends or be described as socially awkward

Restrictive and Repetitive Behavior

  • Limited, persistent, and inflexible focus on particular activities, items, concepts, or body movements
    • Example:  Obsession with something such as trains – all they seem to do is play with trains, watch TV shows about trains, and talk about different types of trains, regardless of what is going on around them.
    • Example:  Flapping their hands repeatedly and during almost all activities.
