Because Life is about Learning

Life is an education; the community is your school. Sometimes you sit in a room as someone teaches you something, but the most valuable lessons come from doing.

That’s why we developed StArcky U. Some organizations call it life skills training; others call it day habilitation. We call it the best process to independence.

We provide life-skills training to increase a person's ability to interact with the community. Participants build skills and expand their personal experiences, leading to a fuller, richer life.

We create an environment so they can develop relationships, hobbies, and skills at their own pace. We offer choices in activities and recreation, because individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities need them to grow and succeed in the community.

We also offer:

  • Recreation and leisure activities, from bowling to swimming, fishing and other fun.
  • Social, communication and safety skills learned by interacting with people in the community, from store clerks to medical professionals to restaurant staff.
  • Critical life skills, including safety, personal care, money management and others.

I am very happy that I took my position at Arc. I am proud to be a part of this organization and seeing what an impact we have on people in the community. ”

Myths:

People with Tourette’s are not intelligent or suffer from mental illness.

Fact:

Tourette’s does not adversely affect intelligence. Mental illnesses affect people with TS no more frequently than in the general population..

Also, involuntary TS movements may lead some to mistakenly assume that individuals with TS are either drunk, on drugs or threatening.
